Get one of the widely available scratching posts (made from rope-like material) and draw thick vertical lines down the rope with a black marker pen. This worked with all of our cats, I think the logic behind it is that they assume another cat has been at the post and fixate upon scratching it themselves as a dominance thing. Once this behaviour is embedded (you might need to keep re-drawing the lines) they should leave your furniture alone.
